Welcome to Colne
The signpost in the centre of the village of Colne, Huntingdonshire
Collen (13th century); Colneye (14th century) and Colne (Modern).
Colne, set amid orchards beside the by-roads between
Earith
and Somersham, is
prettily grouped around a triangular green which used to have a
large pond in it, but sadly long since filled in. Behind the green is a small church built in 1900 to
replace the one half a mile to the north which had fallen down in
1896.
In the north of the parish are the remains of a
Romano-British settlement of considerable archaeological interest.
The site is clearly marked, the conformation of the ground including
certain ancient ditches. It was apparently home to community of
fishermen and hunters in Roman times.
Colne is one of the parishes of the District of
Huntingdonshire, whose administrative centre is
Huntingdon, the other principle towns being
St Ives
home of the Chapel on the Bridge,
St Neots
the largest town in the County of Cambridgeshire, the Roman town of
Godmanchester and
Ramsey
site of the former Abbey. Colne's nearest neighbours are
Bluntisham,
Earith and Somersham.
